CASE STUDY: crissy field

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS AND PLANNING

During Landscape Design Studio 4: Environmental Analysis and Planning, each student was required to analyze a site with similar characteristics to our studio project in terms of water management, remediation, and zoning, in order to learn from precedents before designing our own public space for Johnny Carson Park and adjacent area (see: Landscape Design 4 for that project). I chose to analyze Crissy Field in San Francisco, which has a layered history from its natural wetland ecosystem to indigenous use to a paved parking lot over infill for an air force base. The site was redesigned in 2001 by Hargreaves Jones and Associates, and recently won the ASLA Landmarks Award in 2022 for its exceptional waterfront restoration impact, recycling of materials, and adaptive reuse of existing buildings. This site inspired my work in Landscape Design Studio 4 with its long walking paths, remediated wetland and stormwater management, topographic features for blocking wind, preservation of cultural views, and adaptive reuse to minimize negative construction impacts. All photos and graphics of the site were found on Google, and ownership remains with original photographer, designer, and/or website. Only the written analysis and graphic design and composition of the slides were executed and owned by me.
