Landscape Design 3

ADVANCED SITE DESIGN

This class tackles redesigning a 14-acre civic center landscape surrounding an iconic brutalist building built by Antoine Predock, nestled into the hillside adjacent to the 101 freeway. I combined real-life community survey results, landscape architect site analysis, with my on site analysis and historical, cultural, and environmental research into the site, community, and region, to generate a comprehensive picture of opportunities and constraints for this project, and how it could better serve the residents of Thousand Oaks. Inspired by the rolling hillside motif that Thousand Oaks gets its name from and surrounds the site, and the large elevation changes on site, I created a pedestrian bridge that crosses the entire front of the site in sweeping arcs, providing contrast to the harsh edges of the architecture, while creating a new vantage point for visitors, connecting the sites on either side with a dedicated pedestrian paseo, and producing a memorable visage of the site from the street level. This reimagined civic center removes swathes of unused, water-heavy lawns with diverse programming, including an amphitheater, social steps, cafe and restroom amenities, cultural plazas, sculpture garden for local artists, a splash pad and swing deck, and plenty of seating for small and large groups to enjoy under the mature oak trees. AWARDS & ACCOLADES

Gold SCASLA Excellence Award, 2024 UCLAx Student Show

The judges loved the happy, colorful presentation and the thought put into the layout, particularly the use of rolling hills in the intro and bold, warm colors evocative of the site’s climate. The design choices, such as the raised pathway and circular shapes, were refreshing and purposeful. The accessibility, intimate spaces, and variety of open areas were well-executed, and the 3D model showed a high level of effort. While some refinements were suggested for fencing and visibility, the overall design made the judges want to explore the space, praising the balance of bold shapes and thoughtful elements.
