CASE STUDY: STAIRS

SITE DESIGN

During Landscape Design Studio 2: Site Design, each student was required to analyze 3 sites with stairs in order to learn from precedents before designing our own stairs for the Melnitz Stairs (see: Landscape Design 2B for that project). I chose to analyze the iconic red stairs and escalator at LACMA, the grand entrance stairs in front of Los Angeles City Hall, and the Culver Steps, a recent public retail development. For each site, we were required to analyze the site via graphics, identify a possible conceptual parti, draft the site in plan view and section elevation, and sketch one perspective. All graphics are hand-drafted in pencil, pen, and colored pencil, without any digital rendering or touch ups. All photos of the 3 stair sites shown here and their corresponding original design sketches or plans were found on Google, and ownership remains with original photographer, designer, or website.
