Landscape Design 6
CONCEPT ANALYSIS
This course studied a long, linear greenway along the Tujunga Wash concrete stormwater channel, a tributary of the Los Angeles River in the San Fernando Valley, surrounded by a high school and city college campus on one side, and a residential zone with single- and multi-family buildings on the other side. The heart of the site is a half mile long mural, The Great Wall of Los Angeles created by Judith Baca and SPARC LA, along the concrete channel, depicting the forgotten and disappeared histories of Los Angeles and California, with an emphasis on untold BIPOC stories that contribute to the cultural fabric of Los Angeles. The site also grapples with complex environmental issues, including the lack of green stormwater infrastructure and depletion of wild habitat for native flora and fauna of the original basin. While visiting the site I was particularly influenced by the long views down the river corridor when standing on either end where you can see the sky and ground planes at the same time, which gave me a sense of hope and optimism. It’s at these two points of the site that you can see both the starting point of the water in the San Gabriel Mountains and the end point as it curves around the Santa Monica mountains toward the ocean. This experience resulted in my concept for the park, Sky Valley, that drove my design decisions throughout the park. I created more points along the river where visitors can stand above it looking up and down the channel, including a stargazing bridge to hide an unsightly municipal water pipe; community amenities like an art center, cafe, and restrooms were installed in shipping container buildings; improved circulation included wider in-cut bus stops, buffered paths from the fast vehicular traffic, muraled crosswalks, and a dedicated bike lane over a grated bioswale for cleaning stormwater; and interpretative signage has been added throughout to bring more awareness to the mural’s history and stories told. A 2 minute video was required for submission, embedded below. My full presentation booklet is available to view on the 2025 UCLA Student Show website here.

“A beautifully executed project from start to finish: engaging cover page; clear, easy-to-follow diagramming and site analysis (including an effective section within the site diagram); and a master plan that creates distinct moments and places to pause, with a particularly compelling lounging concept. Graphics are consistent and strong throughout, bus stop integration is well handled, and the timeline and stormwater section are carefully thought through. Thoughtful touches—like a lean rail over the channel—show how people will interact with the space, and the canal/upland areas feel cohesive. The design reads believable, with creative social steps and stargazing elements, and bright murals that highlight points of entry. Notes for improvement: provide more shade at the tot lot, ensure bridges can realistically support proposed loads, and continue refining structural clarity. Overall, a very strong, well-resolved proposal.”
